Paddy Be Easy Set

Irish slip jigs play in a 9/8 time signature, kind of a triple-triplet feel across a one-two-three count: ONE, two three; TWO, two, three; THREE, two, three. I’m only just learning to feel that groove.

An osprey gives a piercing call, hovering high over the lake, flapping its wings like skulling oars. It drops 10 feet, then hovers again, scanning the surface of the water for fish. It dives and hits the water with a splash. Lifting out of the water with a fish in its talons, it flies away southeast, carrying the fish fore-and-aft, head-first, to reduce wind resistance. It disappears from my view over the tree line.

Budding plant life around Massapequa Lake is confirmation of the start of spring. After the cold months, new growth is ubiquitous. You look around, and everything’s green.
